Parents of 5th-8th graders, Welcome to MCS Athletics for 2016-2017!! I am excited to see how our athletes will develop this year as well as anticipating even more team progress.
If your student is participating in Athletics this year (Fall- co-ed Soccer, Winter- Boys Basketball and Girls Cheerleading, Spring- Track and Field (for both boys and girls), you will need to: (1) read all the online forms available in the Eligibility Forms section, (2) print out and sign the Acknowledgment Form, (3) have a current Medical Release Form on file (required if your athlete has not participated in sports before, or if they are over 2 years since their last one), and (4)turn all into the office with the fee (Soccer- $75, Bball-$100, Cheerleading– $50, Track-$75) by the deadline for each sport for your athlete to be eligible to compete.Deadlines are as follows: Soccer—9/9/16, Basketball and Cheer —11/18/16, Track and Field—3/9/17.
For Soccer and Basketball, 5th graders will be given the opportunity to develop their skills in practice time with the team, with the amount of competition game time they play at the coach’s discretion. For Track and Field, 5th graders compete against other 5th graders, so potential limitation is not an issue for this particular sport. At MCS, Athletics is a privilege, NOT a right. This means that parents and athletes need to be aware of the expectations that govern the program. Besides the forms that you will find online, respect for coaches, the Athletic Director, and school Administration are incredibly important for the success of each team. Athlete (& parent) behavior and responsibilities to the team are taken seriously. MCS values each member of the team, and as such, we will not tolerate any conduct that undermines a teammate, coach, or school representative. This is Middle School Sports! MCS Athletics is a skill-based program that lands in between rec sports and Select. The desire is that the athletes have fun, develop skills appropriate to their sport, make individual and team improvements physically, emotionally, and spiritually, and gain school spirit from competition. We also will need parent involvement to make the program happen— from transportation to helping your athlete keep on top of academics and staying in communication with the coaches and Athletic Director, everyone has to pull together to make it possible! Keep up to date on the website—each sport will have its own page with information and calendars that will keep you “in the loop” and informed of current happenings for each team.
If you should have any questions, comments, concerns, or just need help navigating this “new” way of participating in Athletics, please do not hesitate to contact me! I prefer email (firstname.lastname@example.org) when possible. If a phone call works better for you, feel free to call and leave me a message if I am unavailable, and I will call you back as soon as I can. (Our home number is in the school directory) Looking forward to a great year for MCS Athletics!! Blessings, Janel Klingsheim, MCS Athletic Director
